Today’s computing environment calls for demanding application requiring high availability and significant resource demands. In the past, the solution was to run numerous individual servers each with their own independent operating system and dedicated hardware. This requires space, cooling, capital, and power. Today there are several approaches to solving this problem. Products such as VMware and the opensource Xen provide a virtualized environment. Numerous heterogeneous operating systems can be run concurrently on the same hardware. This "consolidated approach" significantly helps reduce hardware costs as well as facilitate management of the systems. In addition, it provides a means to backup entire “live” servers. Furthermore, the servers become hardware independent; thus, allowing for easy migration to new hardware as systems age and become obsolete.
Thin Client computing continues to thrive in corporate America. Although originally touted as a means to reduce hardware costs, thin client computing has truly reduced administrative costs. IT professionals can now administer software deployments and upgrades in a fraction of the time that it would take in prior years. In addition, thin computing has proved to be an excellent tool for the telecommuter. These employees can now effortlessly travel and access their applications via the web in a manner much faster than the traditional VPN connection. Currently, Citrix leads the market.
We have found coupling together thin client computing solutions such as Citrix with virtualized servers like VMware to be a valuable tool for businesses of all sizes. We have dramatically reduced costs for our clients who ran multiple servers as well as help increase productivity by offering a highly available, robust, and complete solution.
